Tunnel renovation for the Rhaetian Railway – The Rhomberg Bahntechnik Method
After the Glatschera Tunnel, Rhomberg Bahntechnik is now renovating another tunnel for the historic Albula line of the Rhaetian Railway: the Bergünerstein Tunnel (409 m).
Most of the Rhaetian Railway´s tunnels were built at the beginning of the 20th century, and half of them will have to be renovated in the coming decades. For this purpose, the RhB developed a new, standardised restoration method: the "Normalbauweise Tunnel". This improves the quality and economy of the tunnel renovations, increases the safety standard and service life of the tunnels from today's average of 30 to 50 years to 70 to 100 years.
In this procedure the walls of the tunnel are completely replaced. The track is lowered, the tunnel cross-section is enlarged, a new drainage system is built, precast concrete elements are used as walls and the portals are rebuilt. The refurbishment of the tunnel is carried out during ongoing operations.
The Rhomberg Bahntechnik was able to convince the RhB with an alternative solution: the IVES system adapted for the “Normalbauweise” will be used for the slab track. The core element here is the Vossloh DFF 304 IVES base. This solution is more economical for the client and also brings some technical advantages: With a smaller excavation cross-section (less bed lowering) and a more stable track position, the RhB's services such as the installation of auxiliary bridges or the supply of superstructure materials are reduced.
The project volume is approximately CHF 11.5 million. Construction was scheduled to start in autumn 2019, with completion scheduled for 2021.
